  • Notes
    • Went to St.Thomas Church of England school from 4-14 years, and alwaysw ent with her parents to the Isle of Man for their holidays. At 14years s he worked in Leigh Confectionery Company wrapping sweets fortwo years, a nd packing in a warehouse. At 16 years she was acceptedinto weaving (w ith Annie Sedden, my godmother) at Walsh Hill WeavingCompany. Courtaul ds opened a new mill for artificial silk weaving andaccepted Ellen at 1 7 years old and there she worked for 5 years, making material for table c loths, and parachute silk during the waryears and supervised the runni ng of eight looms.
She also operated a crepe machine. Six years after the war she movedwi th Robert her husband and Allan to Coventry. When she was fortyyears o ld she started playing the piano three evenings a week for theCoventry K eep Fit association, something she did for over thirtyyears, and still c ontinues to play for old people's homes and takesthe occasional turn o n the organ as substitue organist at St NicholasChurch, Radford.

ELLEN SCOTSON (Nellie Collinge) b. 6 Feb 1916

I lived in Brideoake Street, Bedford, Leigh. As a girl I attended StTh omas's Church and Day School. In my young days Bedford Cinema wasvery p opular in the same street where I lived. We also used to enjoythe chu rch dances in Leigh. The most popular were Saturday eveningdances were t hose of Leigh Parish Church Institute and in StJospeh's Dance Hall. I m et my late husband, Robert Scotson, at a StPeter's Church dance. As a b oy he lived in Bryom Hall, Lowton (Healso had a brother, Abraham, who w as a well-known local figure as theshop manager at Leigh Meadow Dairy, a nd after the War as the owner ofa grocers' shop on the Wigan Road. He w as president of the Leigh &District Grocers Association from 1961-2).

My occupation on leaving school at 14 years old, was at Ogden's SweetF actory in West Leigh. I left this work a year later to learn a tradein w eaving at the Leigh Manufacturing Co. Unfortunately their twomills clo sed down at the beginning of the slump in the cotton trade, and I moved t o Stanley Mill in Duke Street where I worked only forthree weeks, foll owing which I went to Welch Hill Factory in TwistLane. After two happy y ears there, my father, Wilfred Collinge, suggested I go to Courtaulds B rook Mill as a silk weaver, this was animprovement from my previous wo rk. A new weaving shed was opened atBedford Square where we weavers we re each given ten to fourteen loomsto operate on shift work and five y ears I was employed weavingparachute material during Wartime. My husba nd and I were separated bythe war after
one month of marriage Robert Scotson enlistment for the Army AirborneD ivision (later Parachute Regt) in which he served for five years.

The war years were long but were able to find entertainment in thecine mas of Leigh: 'The Regal' in Spinning Jenny Street; 'The Empire'in Bra dshawgate; 'The Palace' and 'Sems' in Railway Road. I stillremember th e first talking pictures at a cinema on Leigh Road, andacross the way w as Leigh Hippodrome with the live shows. 'The TheatreRoyal' in Lord St reet had all kinds of variety - I wonder what thisbuilding is now? I a lso belonged to an afternoon dramatic group atSt. Thomas's Church in B edford. Harry Heap was the producer ofGilbert & Sullivan operettas.

In 1946 we came to live in Coventry. My husband had worked in StanleyM ill but due to the slump there, he found work in silk spinning atCourt aulds, Coventry where he worked for 34 years and eventuallybecame a su perviser. I have been a pianist for the Coventry Keep FitAssociation f or over thirty years, and still play the piano for alocal ladies choir , for elderly people's homes and clubs, and forSalvation Army Senior c itizens. My daughter also teaches the piano inCoventry to school child ren.

My son, Allan Scotson, works as a Free Evangelical Church minister inF inland and he introduced me to "Past Forward" during my recent visitin h is home. Now having read the past five editions I wanted toexpress my a ppreciation for many happy memories they gave me. I thankGod for all t hese.

      Yours faithfully
      Ellen Scotson
